지난달 1월 11일 비행기를 타고 Point Reyes National Seashore 상공을 지나간 적이 있다.

창문으로 Dillon Beach가 선명하게 보여 바로 사진을 찍었다. 이 Dillon Beach는 Geoduck 을 채취할수있는 유명한 갯벌 (아래 빨간 화살표)이 있다.

Geoduck은 미국 서부 태평양이나 워싱턴주 연안 일대에서 나는데 한국어로 '구이덕'이라고한다. Geoduck은 로컬 인디언들이 부르던 이름에서 유래가 되었으며 그 뜻은 “ dig deep” 이라고 하는데 모래속 깊은 곳에 살기 때문이다. 일부 특급 호텔에서 엄청나게 비싸게 팔려 소수의 미식가나 식도락가들만 먹을 수 있는 구이덕은 남근 모양 때문에 중국에서는 정력에 좋은 최음제(aphrodisiac)로 간주된다.

조개 껍질의 길이는 15cm(6인치)에서 20cm(8인치) 이상이지만 매우 긴 사이펀으로 인해 조개 자체가 이보다 훨씬 길어진다. "목" 또는 사이펀만 1미터. geoduck은 세계에서 가장 큰 굴을 파는 조개이다. 또한 일반적인 수명이 140년으로 모든 종류의 가장 오래 사는 동물 중 하나이다. 기록된 가장 오래된 표본은 179세였지만 개체의 수명은 대개 140세까지다. 정확한 수명은 껍데기에 퇴적된 연륜을 통해 결정될 수 있으며, 이 연륜은 또한 과거 해양 변동성의 기록 보관소 역할을 한다.

캐나다 서해안과 미국 북서부 해안(주로 워싱턴과 브리티시 컬럼비아)이 원산지인 이 해양 연체동물은 세계에서 가장 큰 굴을 파는 조개로, 무게는 평균 0.7kg이다. 긴 사이펀을 통해 플랑크톤이 포함된 물을 빨아들인 다음 이를 여과하여 먹이로 삼고 사이펀에 있는 별도의 구멍을 통해 쓰레기를 배출한다. 다 자란 Geoduck는 자연 포식자가 거의 없어 장수 수명에 도움이 될 수도 있다.

비행기를 타고 저녁때 같은 지역 Dillon Beach 상공을 지났다. 오른쪽 해변을 보면 썰물이 최대인듯 갯벌이 많이 들어나았다.

Geoduck 암컷은 평생 동안 약 50억 개의 알을 낳는다. 새끼들은 사망률이 높기 때문에 개체수 회복이 더디게 진행된다. 수확된 지역의 복구 시간은 39년정도 걸린다고 한다. 1989년부터 10년 동안 구이덕은 그야말로 Gold Rush였다. 그동안 구이덕 채취는 워싱턴주의 Ichiban 근처의 소수민족(인디안)들의 큰 수입원이 되어왔다. 소수민족 구이덕 채취자들은 평균 78,000 -100,000불의 큰 수익을 올리고 있다. 구이덕은 1960년 한 해군 다이버가 통제불능의 어뢰를 복구하기 위해 일을 하다가 우연히 발견했다고 한다.

그러나 정작 미국에서는 이 구이덕을 식당에서 맛보기 힘듭니다. 4개를 주문하면 운이좋으면 2개를 받을 수 있다고 하니요. 미국 식당은 파운드당 30-40달러를 주고 구입합니다. 한마리당 90 - 120달러인 셈이네요. "저는 한 방울의 간장으로 생으로 요리해서 올리브 오일과 약간의 와사비를 얹어서 서빙합니다.그 바삭바삭 씹히는 느낌과 향 때문에 구이덕은 내가 제일 좋아하는 요리입니다."
