It is crowned by a magnificent white dome that overlooks the city of Washington and has become a widely recognized icon of the American people and government.

Smithsonian Aero-Space Museum 은 항상 엄청난 관광객으로 붐빈다. 시간 예약을 3~4일전에 하고 들어와야한다. 그래도 줄은 200 m 이상 길게 늘어선다.

이를 놓일세라 포장마차 Food truck들도 줄지어 늘어섰다. 

역시 Wright Brothers 가 이 Museum을 완전히 압도하고 있다.

미국이 자랑하는 최고의 발명가라고 해도 과언이 아닐정도다.

눈을 끄는 것은 라이트 형제가 만들고 타고 다닌 자전거 

그리고 Smithsonian Aero-Space Museum에서 이것이 빠지면 안될테고.

이사진 만큼 20세기 전세계인들을 경악시킨 사진은 없을 것이다.

나에겐 The United States Botanic Garden 이 가장 볼만했다. 규모면이나 다양성에서 그 어느 식물원도 따라 올수없을 것같다.

The United States Botanic Garden is the oldest continuously operating public garden in the United States. The Garden is rooted in the nation's heritage. During the late 18th century, George Washington had a dream of a national botanic garden and was instrumental in establishing one on the National Mall in 1820.

지중해성 기후를 설명하는 Section에서 눈에 익은 사진이 보인다. 바로 Big Sur 에 있는 Julia Phiper Fall 이다. 그리고 지중해성 기후가 전세계적으로 아주 드물게 존재하는데 CA가 여기에 포함되는 사실을  알게되어 기뻤다. 

많은 사람들이 관심을 보이는 꽃이 있었다. 무시무시한 이름인 시체꽃이다.

Why does the corpse flower smell so bad?

The corpse flower's scent is a chemical combination of dimethyl trisulfide, isovaleric acid, dimethyl disulfide, benzyl alcohol, indole, and trimethylamine. The odor is meant to mimic decomposition in order to attract its native pollinators– carrion beetles and flesh flies– who are drawn to the smell of decaying meat. 시체꽃의 향기는 디메틸삼황화물, 이소발레르산, 디메틸디황화물, 벤질알코올, 인돌, 트리메틸아민의 화학적 조합이다. 이 냄새는 썩어가는 고기 냄새에 이끌리는 토종 수분매개자인 썩은 딱정벌레와 살파리를 유인하기 위해 부패를 모방해서 이렇게 냄새를 발산한다.

사흘만에 맑아진 Washington DC. 시민들이 잔디에서 금요일 오후를 즐긴다. 이 젊은이는 무슨 공부에 이렇게 빠져있는지.. 미국 젊은세대들의 남의 시선에 개의치 않고 개인적인 일에 몰두하는 한면을 보여준다.

미국은 역시 영웅만들기를 좋아한다. Pocahotas 를 미국의 여왕으로 미화하고 있다. - American Indian Museum
